What did we do?

After some discussion about the overall color scheme, we realized that both I and my client had Orange & Black high school mascots. AND, they currently reside in St. Louis Park, also Black and Orange! It seemed to be decided by fate.

We pulled out our trusty Sherwin Williams paint deck. In minutes, we had chosen our palette.

We also knew that we wanted a natural wood floor in the space, most likely maple and definitely without a stain.  We had a few options to choose from.

a clear maple in a premium grade ~ little to no character, high gloss

a clear maple with a variation of color ~ some character, low sheen

shopping (1)

a character grade maple ~ strong character, matte finish, no sheen

In the end, we chose the high character grade with a low sheen.  The character in the floor provided us with a warmth that had a more “homey” feel. The low sheen kept us from high maintenance, still providing the protection a space with heavy use needs.

The Lesson

Sometimes, all a space needs for a dramatic “POW” is a little COLOR.

What does the client think?

“We bought this house because of the gym and its potential for fun with family and friends. It never had a wow factor until Michelle put her design skills to work. She took it from a sterile cement box to an amazingly beautiful vibrant room. The colors are bold and perfect. The wood floor is gorgeous. We feel that our house value increased tremendously. It’s really fun to open the door and see people’s reaction. It didn’t occur to us that this room could ever be so amazing!”
